BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The LIU Post volleyball team swept Chestnut Hill, 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-21), in non-conference action Friday night in the Pratt Recreation Center.

The Griffins (1-9) jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead in the first set, but the Pioneers (7-2) came back eventually tying the score at 5-5 thanks to three Chestnut Hill errors, a kill by junior setter Gulia Genna (Rome, Italy), and a service ace by sophomore defensive specialist Allie Ahearne (Westminster, Colo.).

With the scoreboard reading 9-8 in favor of the visitors, LIU Post went on a 6-1 run capped off by an Elise Strange (Chesapeake, Va.) kill to take a 14-10 advantage.  The Griffins did not go away, though. Even after the home squad led 21-14, Chestnut Hill registered eight of the next nine points to knot the set at 22.

The Pioneers put the set away on a kill by senior outside hitter Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to take the opening set 25-23.

The second set started out similar with both teams trading points back-and-forth with four tie scores by the time the scoreboard read 8-8.  Then the green and gold knocked out the next five points (13-8) on a Valenza service ace, and kills by junior outside hitter Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio) and sophomore setter Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (North Miami Beach, Fla.).

That would prove to be enough of a lead for LIU Post over the remainder of the set as Valenza once again smacked down the set-sealing kill to take the set 25-16.

With the Griffins leading the majority of the third and final set, the Pioneers took their first lead at 21-20 as they scored six of the final seven points of the match. Three of those, including the final two, came via Londot kills.

The night's leaders were: Londot with 12 kills, Strange with four blocks, Akouri-Tejedor with 20 assists, and senior libero Indira Rojas (Coama, Puerto Rico) with 18 digs.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Sept. 16) when they host a tri-match with Wilmington and New Haven. Games are set for 12, 2, and 4 p.m.
