GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – A penalty kick goal by
Morten Wenaas in the second half led the seventh-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over non-conference foe American International College on Saturday afternoon at Motamed Field on the campus of Adelphi University.
Exactly 15 minutes into the contest, graduate
Lukas Ostermann (Saterland, Germany) secured a low-ball feed from the right side off the foot of
Gianluca Santacruz (Southampton, N.Y.) and finished inside the left post for the opening score.
The Pioneer (1-0-1) defense would not allow a single Yellowjacket (1-1) shot in the first half, as the Green and Gold outshot AIC 10-0 in the opening frame. The second half was a different story as the Yellowjackets held a 10-5 advantage in shots leading to them tying up the score just over five minutes into the latter half as Steven Hernandez finished a deflection off goalie
Oliver Hessner Hansen's (Vaerloese, Denmark) hands and found the bottom left corner of the net.
That would prove to be AIC's only opportunity to break down the Pioneer defense as Wenaas' penalty-kick goal proved to be the game-winner in the 63
rd minute.
Hansen finished with two saves on the afternoon while allowing just one goal. On the other side of the field, Ostermann and Wenaas have now each tallied a score in each of the first two games of the 2017 campaign.
Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to Bridgeport, Conn. for the Purple Knight Classic. They will face-off against Merrimack on Thursday, Sept. 7 and Southern Conn. State on Saturday, Sept. 9 with both matches beginning at 4 p.m.
