RESULTS

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU Post swimming team coasted to a 163-99 victory, winning 12 of 14 events against Assumption College on Senior Day Jan. 20.

Before the meet, the Pioneers honored their three graduating members, Laura Bendfeldt, Jacqueline Tonn, and Eline Swensen. The trio had combined for 66 total wins, All-Metropolitan Conference honors in 20 events, and eight major academic awards entering the day.

The Pioneers put together another dominating effort, and have now won 21 of their last 25 events, improving to 5-1 in dual meets this season.

The 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Bendfeldt, juniors Karis Fuller and Caitlin Johnstone, and sophomore Tove Sparrman got the meet started with a first-place finish in 1:47.18. After Assumption took the top two spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Sparrman picked up her second win, touching the pad in 1:58.57 during the 200-yard freestyle. Fuller followed up the performance with an individual victory of her own, besting the competition by nearly four seconds in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.97. Johnstone rounded out the relay team's run of individual wins, touching the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.80.

The stretch of wins continued during the 200-yard butterfly, when freshman Gena Mendez captured first-place in 2:15.77, just over one second better than Assumption's Colleen Kurtz. Bendfeldt's dominance carried over to Saturday's meet, as the senior earned her first individual victory of the day with a time of 23.98 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. After a short break, Bendfeldt' recorded the third-fastest time in program history during the 100-yard freestyle, blowing past the competition with a time of 51.54 seconds. It was the first top-five time in the event recorded inside Pratt Natatorium, and the senior now holds two of the top-five times in the sprint.

Fuller added win number three for the day, placing first with a time of 2:05.41 during the 200-yard backstroke to win by a 10-second margin. Johnstone added her third victory of the day with a 2:28.26 time in the 200-yard breaststroke before Assumption once again took the top-two times during the 500-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Cassie St. Angelo earned a narrow victory during the 100-yard butterfly, out touching Court Barr of Assumption by .23 second. Bendfeldt captured her fourth victory of the afternoon during the 100-yard individual medley, a race which featured the three graduating Pioneers.

The Green and Gold closed out the day by taking the top two spots in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Mendez, sophomore Jessica Argelander, Swensen and Sparrman just beat out fellow teammates, freshmen Emily Shoup and Britney Caprio, and sophomores Elizabeth Law and St. Angelo for the top spot to put a stamp on the victory.

The Pioneers return to action next Saturday, Jan. 27, when they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Kutztown University at 1:00 p.m.
