BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Led by Jared River's game-high 22 points, the LIU Post men's basketball team topped Queens College 68-58 Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference action.
Aary Bibens tallied the game's lone double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while
Darien Jenkins added 17 points and
Hunter Powell chipped in with 10 points.
The contest was played tightly with the largest lead of the first half being six-points by the Pioneers, 26-20, with 1:40 to play. Out of the break, the Knights tied the game 26-26 and the two teams battled basket-for-basket until a three-pointer from Rivers gave LIU Post the lead for good with 13:11 remaing.
The Pioneers kept the advantage despite the Knights coming back within one point on two occasions. Then a layup by Powell at 9:45 sent the Pioneers on a 9-2 run, widening the gap to 55-47 with 6:39 to play. LIU Post claimed its largest lead of the contest at 2:09 left with another three-pointer from Rivers. Despite the series of free throws by the Knights, the Pioneers held on for the 68-58 victory.
For the Knights, Tyrone Hall checked in with 14 points and Issac Grant added 11 points.
LIU Post returns to East Coast Conference action on Friday, Jan. 12 on the road at Daemen College.
