BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Senior
Tarryn Morris made sure her senior day was one to remember as she scored the game-winning goal in the 68
th minute to give the No. 8 LIU Post field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Assumption College Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
"Tremendous win for the Pioneers today," said head coach
Raenee Savin. "Always good to come away with a win in front of a huge crowd on Senior Day! It was a hard-fought battle; Assumption is a great team and played a tough game until the very end. Tarryn's goal with just about two minutes to go kept us from going to overtime, something we've seen with this team way too many times.
Family members from near and far and alumnae from various years were all around to show some recruits what Post field hockey is all about. With this being our last home regular season game as LIU POST Field Hockey, it's a great way to go out on top!"
The win moved LIU Post to 12-4 overall and 11-3 in the Northeast-10.
Morris and freshman
Brianna Petruccelli were LIU Post's goal-scorers while senior
Emily Miller added one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper
Rachel Vellis added three saves.
The Pioneers out-shot the Greyhounds 11-4 and 8-4 in shots on goal. The Green and Gold also tallied 11 penalty corners to eight by Assumption.
While the opening half was played to a 0-0 stalemate, Petruccelli scored her second goal of the season and gave the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage at 42:35 after the ball rebounded off the goalkeeper's leg and she ripped a shot into the back left corner.
The Greyhounds leveled the score 1-1 at 55:33 but Morris would not be denied in the 68
th minute as she scored the game winning goal after receiving a pass from Miller from the left side of the net.
