CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – Sophomore
Alyssa Mallery matched her career-high with five goals, but the No. 5 LIU Post women's lacrosse team came up short on a rain-soaked afternoon against No. 4 Le Moyne College, 12-7, on March 11.
Mallery scored four of the Pioneers' five second-half goals and senior
Olivia Kirk made 15 saves on the afternoon. Le Moyne's potent offensive pressure proved to be too much for LIU Post, however, as the Dolphins outshot the Pioneers, 38-16 and also forced a season-high 21 LIU Post turnovers.
Le Moyne took an early 2-0 lead during the first six minutes of the contest, but Mallery got the Pioneers on the board with a tally just under seven minutes into the contest. Following a three-goal burst by the Dolphins, sophomore
Brianna Feldman scored midway through the half, though it was the final goal for LIU Post in the stanza, as neither team scored during the final nine minutes and Le Moyne took a 6-2 lead into halftime.
The momentum continued for the Dolphins to open the second half, as Le Moyne scored four unanswered goals to open the period, extending its lead to 10-2. Goals by Mallery and sophomore
Sara Stephens halted the run, and Mallery added two more tallies to cut the deficit down to five goals (11-6). Le Moyne held LIU Post scoreless, however, for over eight minutes to hang on for the 12-7 victory.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back from the two-game skid when they take on No. 7 University of New Haven in Orlando, Fla. on Tuesday, March 13 at 11:00 a.m.
