BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The New York Institute of Technology avoided a four-game sweep during the 2018 edition of the Battle of the Boulevard series, as the LIU Post baseball team came up short, 12-3 in the series finale March 27.
The contest marked the first true home game in East Coast Conference play this season for the Pioneers, as yesterday's home contest was held at the neighboring Angelo Lorenzo Memorial Field due to poor field conditions. Despite the loss, the Pioneers still won the series by taking three of four games against the Bears.
Junior
Anthony Vaglica recorded the lone multi-hit game for the Pioneers, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. Classmate
Jimmy Mendyk drove home two of the three runs for LIU Post, while freshman
Daniel Keane laced a double to left-center in his first collegiate at-bat.
The Bears plated the first run of the contest in the top of the second inning when
Joey Fusco doubled to center field, and NYIT added to its lead when
Jake Lebel hit his third home run in two days to score two more in the fifth. LIU Post got three runs back in the sixth, but it was the final rally of the day as the Bears pulled away with five runs in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
It will be a busy week for the Pioneers, as the team will host the University of Bridgeport in a four-game set from Thursday, March 29 through Saturday, March 31. All four games will be played at the LIU Post baseball field, as construction is still ongoing for the Purple Knights new field.
