DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The LIU Post baseball team was forced to settle for its first series split of the season as the Pioneers came up short to Mercy College, 2-1 on the road April 22.
It was a pitching duel between the two squads Sunday, as sophomore
Julien Arcos tossed a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out nine batters while allowing just two runs. The Mavericks used five different pitchers to shut down the Pioneer offense, as
Oscar Marcial earned the win with 0.2 innings pitcher in the sixth inning.
At the plate, five different Pioneers recorded one hit, as juniors
Dave Brehm and
Michael Manzione knocked a double and senior
Joe Spitaleri recorded the lone run batted in of the day.
Senior
Ramger Iglesias got things started for the Pioneers in the top of the third inning, reaching first on a bunt single to the pitcher and advancing two bases on an error to set up a sacrifice fly by Spitaeri to take a 1-0 lead. The lead continued for the Green and Gold into the fifth inning before a lead-off error set the table for a two-out RBI-double by
John Mooradian to tie the score, 1-1.
The Pioneers stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth and the Mavericks took advantage of another Pioneer error to take the lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame to jump ahead 2-1. LIU Post had just two runners reach base over its final three at-bats and the Maverick pitching staff did just enough to hang on for the one-run victory.
The Green and Gold return to action on Wednesday, April 25 for its final non-conference matchup of the season when the team travels to Pennsylvania for a rescheduled matchup with East Stroudsburg University at 3:00 p.m.
