BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Buoyed by eight saves by sophomore goalkeeper
Rachel Vellis and a game-winning goal by senior
Emily Miller, the LIU Post field hockey team defeated Adelphi University 2-1 in overtime Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
"It feels great to the W today," said head coach
Raenee Savin. "We celebrated the win on the field but recognize that we still have mountains to climb. We will learn from today and build for tomorrow!"
Miller and sophomore
Sammy Bell each scored one goal, Miller and freshman
Emma Braeckmans each added one assist and Vellis turned back eight shots including a penalty stroke.
Highlighted by Vellis' five saves including a penalty stroke with 23:27 on the clock the first half played to a stalemate as neither team found the back of the net.
The second half began in similar fashion until Bell scored the game's opening goal with under four minutes left to play; Miller passed to her from the left side of the goal to the front of the circle where she put the Pioneers on the scoreboard.
Shortly after the Panthers bounced back courtesy of a penalty stroke goal, sending the game into overtime.
While Miller's shot nine seconds into overtime was saved it did not take long for her to again find herself in scoring position as she scored the game-winning goal under a minute later. She launched the ball from outside the arc and it deflected to the inside left post after receiving an assist from Braeckmans.
