BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Despite coming back from a 3-1 deficit and taking the game to overtime, the No. 3 LIU Post field hockey team narrowly fell 4-3 to Bentley University (2-1) Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in its first complete game of the 2018 season.

Very little separated the two teams as the Pioneers recorded 16 shots and 10 shots on goal to 12 and 11 by the Falcons. Senior duo Emily Miller and Tarryn Morris along with sophomore Sammy Bell each scored goals for the Pioneers while senior Bailey Martin and freshman Emma Braeckmans added assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Vellis turned away seven shots.

Despite eight shots by the Pioneers to three by the Falcons the opening period was played to a stalemate as neither team found the back of the net.

The second half was a different story as the Pioneers quickly recorded the first goal of the game 57 seconds into the half thanks to Emily Miller capitalizing on an assist from Braeckmans; Braeckmans passed across from the left side to Miller in a scramble in front of goal where she put the Pioneers on the scoreboard for the first time in 2018.

It didn't take long for Bentley to respond as the Falcons leveled the score with a goal off a corner with 37:22 on the clock. Bentley further built its lead thanks to goals with 41:47 and 43:01 on the clock and held a 3-1 lead heading into the later stages of the half.

The Pioneers battled their way back into the game at 53:11 when Martin found Bell from the top of the circle where she ripped the ball into the left corner. LIU Post's comeback continued with 60:02 on the clock as Morris scored on a penalty stroke to level the score 3-3. The game then headed into overtime as neither team was able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity in the final stages of the second half.

Bentley only required one minute and seven seconds to score in overtime and halt the Pioneers' comeback.
