BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In the storied crosstown rivalry known as the Battle of the Boulevard, the New York Institute of Technology took the final bragging rights as the LIU Post women's basketball team dropped an 80-60 decision to the Bears in the East Coast Conference championship game at Harvey Hubble Gymnasium on Sunday, March 10.
Graduate student
Sasha Patterson led the Pioneers with a game-high 19 points while hauling in seven rebounds. Redshirt-junior
Robyn Francis added 11 points, while freshman
Ja'Lyn Armstrong chipped in nine points.
Despite LIU Post jumping out to a 7-6 lead early on, NYIT scored seven unanswered at the midway point of the opening quarter to take a 16-10 lead. The lead grew to seven points at the end of the period, and eventually stretched to 14 points during the first half. The Pioneers chipped away however, using a full-court press to disrupt the Bears' offense, leading to a 10-0 run by the Green and Gold to make it 31-27 with four minutes remaining in the half. A late jumper just before the halftime buzzer pushed NYIT's lead back to six points (35-29) as the teams entered the locker room.
The Pioneer momentum was halted by the halftime break, as NYIT stormed out of the locker room to a 12-point lead (46-34) and LIU Post could not find the answer down the stretch. NYIT Took its biggest lead of the day at 29 points during the fourth quarter and held on for its first ECC Championship.
LIU Post ends the season with a 19-12 overall record and a 10-8 mark in ECC regular season play.
