Calderone Becomes Second Three-Time All-American at NCAA Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A seventh-place finish at this weekend's NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships helped redshirt-senior Joe Calderone to his third All-America honor, becoming the second Pioneer in program history to accomplish the feat.

Calderone posted a 3-2 mark at the event, garnering two victories during wrestle backs to claim the seventh-place finish. With the All-America achievement, Calderone becomes the second Pioneer to place at the national event three or more times, a feat that was last accomplished by Steve Fontana '81.

The Huntington Station native opened the event with an 8-0 major decision against Western Colorado's Jason Hanenberg to advance to the championship quarterfinals. His national title run was halted, however, when Jose Rodriguez (Notre Dame (Ohio)) earned an 8-5 victory to force Calderone into the consolation bracket.

In his first bout in the consolation bracket, Calderone secured his All-America status with a 2-1 overtime victory against Indianapolis' Angelo Robles. On Saturday morning, Calderone opened up with a Super Region I rematch against Joey Alessandro from Pitt-Johnstown. Despite earning a pinfall victory during the previous matchup to claim the Super Region I title, Calderone fell by a 5-1 decision to drop into the seventh-place bout against Jared Donahue (Wheeling Jesuit).

In his final bout of his career, Calderone went out on top with a stellar performance to claim the seventh position at the national championship, shutting out Donahue by a 3-0 final.
