BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The LIU Post baseball team resumed its series with the University of Bridgeport Sunday at Seaside Park and while the Pioneers dropped the opening game 1-0, they bounced back to prevail 17-2 in game two in a contest where LIU Post's offense exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman
David Franchi led the Pioneers with a .750 batting average after going 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI. Senior
Dave Brehm had three hits and three RBI, senior
Michael Manzione had three hits and two RBI while redshirt junior
Andy Camilo also added three hits.
Junior
Mike Stiles earned the win for LIU Post in game two after striking out 10 in 8.1 innings and only allowing two earned runs.
Game One – Bridgeport 1, LIU Post 0
The opening contest of the day was not decided until the top of the ninth when Bridgeport scored the only run of the game.
LIU Post came close to scoring in the top of the fourth when senior
Jimmy Mendyk reached on a fielder's choice and junior
Zach Fritz advanced to third then again in the top of the fifth when Camilo grounded out to third base and senior
Anthony Vaglica advanced to second and Brehm third.
Despite the Pioneers' six hits and nine walks, they could not muster a run and the Purple Knights took the win, 1-0.
Game Two – LIU Post 17, Bridgeport 2
An offensive eruption combined with a stellar outing on the mound from Stiles led LIU Post victory in game two.
A grand slam to right field by Franchi in the bottom of the third gave LIU Post a 4-0 advantage and while the Purple Knights added two runs in the top of the fourth, the Pioneers added an incredible 13 runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The inning consisted of a two RBI double to center by Brehm, a two RBI single to center field by Fritz, an RBI single to center field by Franchi, a two RBI double to left field by Manzione and a two RBI double to right center by Vaglica. The Pioneers also scored on three walks and one hit by pitch as they went on to triumph 17-2.
