Mike Corona comes into his fifth year as head coach of the LIU Post women's fencing team in 2017-18.
Corona's second season saw the Pioneers qualify for the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships for the second time in as many years. Kirstan Shaw earned a 32nd-place finish in epee to pace the green and gold. Athena Grauer finished 36th in the foil discipline. Katie Niemir and Chantelle Duncan added 41st- and 42nd-place showings in sabre and epee, respectively.
In his first year (2014-15), Corona worked hard to bring the brand-new program to a steady and solid foundation. Under Corona's guidance, three of his fencers qualified for the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, while senior Alexa Parry captured a 22nd-place finish in epee at the Max Garret Invitational at Penn State. Additionally, the Pioneers hosted their first home event and picked up an 11-5 victory over Stony Brook on Feb. 8, 2015.
Corona was hired to mentor the fencing program by LIU Post Director of Athletics and Recreation Bryan Collins on Feb. 7, 2014.
Corona served as head coach of the Brentwood fencing team from 2002-14, where he produced a competitive program. Among his accomplishments are 27 Top-6 fencers, with six individual champions. He has been named Coach of the Year six times and brings a winning attitude to LIU Post. Corona is a Long Island product, graduating from Centereach High School in 1978, where he was a County Champion in Epee. In addition, Corona was a bronze medalist in the first-ever Empire Games.
He then attended Penn State University, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. While attending PSU, Corona achieved All-America honors three times in epee.
Corona currently lives in Middle Island, N.Y. with his wife, Delfina, daughter, Theresa, and son, Kyle, who is a men's lacrosse player at Arizona State University.
