BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 11, 2008) - Despite outhitting the Bulldogs, the baseball team dropped a non-conference game to the Bryant University on Friday afternoon in Brookville, N.Y.
The win pushed Bryant's record to 22-11, while the Pioneers drop to 14-16. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for C.W. Post.
Keith Karlsen took the loss for the Pioneers, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The Pioneers took an early lead in the first, when Mike Sylvester singled, stole second, moved to third on a sac fly, and scored on Kyle Walker's double to right center.
Bryant answered right back with a run in the second when Taylor Ferguson doubled to right center and scored on Mark Dondero's single to right field.
The Pioneers took the lead again in the third when Bryan Bonin ripped a double down the left field line, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Walker's RBI sacrifice fly to left field.
However, a three-run fourth gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead. Nick Campbell had the only hit in the inning, but two walks and two hit batters did the damage for Bryant.
Another run in the sixth and four more in the eighth gave Bryant a 9-1 lead.
The Pioneers fought back in the bottom of the eighth, when Sylvester singled, Bonin doubled, and Walker singled to drive in a run. Bonin scored on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to 9-4, but another Bulldog run in the tenth gave Bryant a six run advantage, and Tom Baker pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
Luke Cowan earned the win for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings of work.
The Pioneers collected 10 hits to the Bulldogs nine, but the Pioneer pitching staff issued 10 walks.
Offensively, Sylvester and Walker each went 3-for-4, with Walker picking up three RBI, and Bonin and Mike Callaghan each notched two hits, Bonin with two doubles and Callaghan with one.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow, when they travel to Concordia for an ECC doubleheader starting at noon.
