New Haven Takes Two From Baseball; 4-2, 1-0
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 26, 2008) – Despite allowing just one earned run in two games, the Pioneers fell victim to a doubleheader sweep at the hands on the University of New Haven, dropping game one by a 4-2 count, before being edged in the nightcap, 1-0.
The Pioneers fall to 23-22 overall and 15-9 in the ECC, while the Chargers improve to 19-21 and 14-9 in the East Coast Conference.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, as
Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.), who had reached on a walk, scored on a passed ball, but the lead was short lived as the Chargers answered back in the bottom of the inning with a run on a Jimmy Rivas RBI single up the middle.
New Haven took a 2-1 lead in the third when Evan Okon doubled and scored on Rivas' misplayed ball to the centerfielder.
The Chargers pushed across two insurance runs in the fifth, and despite a C.W. Post rally in the eighth, scoring a run on a
Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) RBI single, the Pioneers fell by a final score of 4-2.
Kevin Gerard (Levittown, N.Y.) took the loss for the Pioneers, giving up four runs (only one earned) on nine hits, striking out four.
Jamie Garland (East Meadow, N.Y.) and
Dan Walsh (Centereach, N.Y.) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Offensively the Pioneers managed just five hits in the game, with Bonin, Walker,
Bruce Testa (Glen Cove, N.Y.),
Steve Algarroba (Astoria, N.Y.) and
Tim Sylvester (Farmingdale, N.Y.) notching singles for C.W. Post
The second game saw the Pioneers outhit the Chargers, but they were unable to come up with the clutch hit, despite a strong one-run, four-hit (6 K's) effort by starter
Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.)
New Haven scored their only run of the game in the second, when Michael Moras scored on Kyle Donnelly's RBI single.
That would be the only run the Chargers needed, as Dan Blake picked up the win and Mitch Rossi earned the save.
The Pioneers return home to host Adelphi on Tuesday, April 29, for a 3 p.m. game.
