BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2008) – The C.W. Post baseball team completed a two-game sweep of Mercy College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers took the first game, 3-1, and held on to defeat the Mavericks, 2-0, in the second game.
C.W. Post rebounds from a loss to Queens (N.Y.) earlier in the week to improve its conference record to 5-5 and overall record to 12-15. The losses snap a three-game winning streak for the Mavericks as they slip to 8-15 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
In the first game, sophomore
Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) pitched seven innings for the Pioneers and let up just one run on three hits to improve his record to 3-0. Senior

The Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning when senior third baseman
Steve Algarroba (Astoria, N.Y.) singled to the shortstop to score junior catcher

C.W. Post widened its lead in the bottom of the fourth when Algarroba singled up the middle and advanced on the throw while senior leftfielder
Brian Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) came around from second to score.
The Mavericks got on the board late in the eighth when junior right fielder Chris Pannullo singled through the right side, scoring freshman shortstop Michael Ferrante. Mercy attempted to score two on the play when Graig Lauricella rounded third and headed for home but was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Testa. Pannullo attempted to stretch the hit out to a double but was tagged out on a throw from Anderson to Bonin to end the inning.
Algarroba led the Pioneer bats, going 2-for-2 at the plate with two hits and two RBI.
Freshman Anthony DiCarlo took the loss for Mercy, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking one in eight innings pitched.
In game two, as a result of a previously scheduled game that was rained out, the Pioneers stepped on the field as the visiting team.
Both teams went scoreless through three before the Pioneers scored a single run in the top of fourth when senior designated hitter
Mike Sylvester (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored on a groundout from junior second baseman
Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) to the pitcher.
C.W. Post added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Walker singled to centerfield to score
