WILMINGTON, Del. (Jan. 3, 2009) -
Behind senior guard Jonathan Schmidt's career-high 35 points, the sixth-ranked Pioneers cruised to a 93-63 victory over the Goldey-Beacom Lightning at the Joseph West Jones Center, while improving their record to 9-0, the best start in school history.

The 9-0 slate betters the previous start of 8-0, set by the Pioneers in the 1964-65 season.
The Lightning jumped out to a quick 7-0 run, but the Pioneers answered with a trey by Schmidt to get on the board. After a Goldey-Beacom basket by Anthony Parham put the hosts back up by six, the Pioneers took over, going on a 25-2 run to lead by 17 points (28-11) with 9:20 remaining in the half. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half and the Pioneers took a 45-30 lead into the halftime break.
The Pioneers charged out of the halftime break with a 9-2 run and never looked back, pushing their lead to 28 points (65-37) with 12:45 left to play, and leading by as many as 36 points (1:45 remaining) as they rolled to victory.
Schmidt's career high 35 points included 12-of-15 shooting from the floor, 4-of-6 from behind the arc, and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. Kenny Burkes (Suitland, Md.) added 17 points and a team-high five assists, and Kevin Spann (West Babylon, N.Y.) also added 14 points
CWP shot 58.6% from the floor (34-of-58), and 44.4% (8-of-18) from behind the arc. The Pioneers out-rebounded the Lightning by a 49-26 margin, outscoring them 50-30 in the paint and scoring 30 points off 22 Goldey-Beacom turnovers.
Kyle White paced the Lightning with 21 points.
The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 6, as they travel to Lincoln for a 5 p.m. matchup.
