BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2009) - A 28-6 first half run put the Pioneers up by 22 points and second-ranked C.W. Post and rolled to a 91-69 victory over the Concordia Clippers in East Coast Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Meyer Athletic Center.
The win keeps the Pioneers undefeated and pushes their win streak to 19 games, with a 19-0 record overall and a 13-0 record in the ECC.
Another milestone was reached as senior guard Kevin Spann (West Babylon, N.Y.) scored his 1,000th career point with a 13-point effort against the Clippers.
The Clippers slip to 6-18 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
The teams traded baskets to start the game, and with the scored tied 4-4 after three minutes of play, the Pioneer offense took over. Spann hit back-to-back treys to give the Pioneers a 13-6 advantage, and a layup by Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.), a trey by Kenny Burkes (Suitland, Md.) and another Schmidt layin saw the Pioneers go up by 14 points (20-6) at 14:19.
A 12-2 run put the Pioneers up by 22 with 10:31 to play in the half.
The lead remained in double digits and grew to as large as 30 points at 2:23 after James Tchana's free throw, and the Pioneers took a 55-27 lead into the half.
C.W. Post came out of the half shooting and despite an comeback effort by the Clippers, who were able to pull within 18 points, the Pioneer offense was too much for Concordia as C.W. Post coasted to the 22-point victory.
Schmidt's 22-point effort paced the Pioneers, and his eight assists were a game-high as well. Burkes and Carter each added 15 points, Burkes chipped in with six assists and four steals while Carter was an efficient 5-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe; and Spann added 13 points and three steals. Junior forward Lyndon Daniel (St. George's, Grenada) just missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.
The Pioneers shot 50 percent from the floor (31-of-62) and were 23-for-29 from the line. The won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Clippers 43-35 and scoring 20 points off 19 Clipper turnovers. CWP held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint.
Sean Walker and Samuel Batista each scored 15 points for the Clippers, and Daniel Olsen and Kenny Gaskins each chipped in with 13 points. Olsen pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Pioneers return home to the Pratt Recreation Center to host Bridgeport on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m., in a battle of the two top teams in the ECC.
