Box Score
DAVIDSON, NC (Feb. 15, 2009) - Trailing 8-3 at halftime, the second ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team opened the second half with four straight goals, cutting the Davidson Wildcat lead down to 8-7 but the Pioneers were unable to complete the comeback, dropping their season opener to the Division I Wildcats, 16-11.
Senior midfielder Katie Hogan (Farmingville, N.Y.) got the Pioneers on the board with a free position shot at 27:41, but three Davidson goals quickly gave the Wildcats a 3-1 advantage. Senior attacker Jaclyn Napoli (West Islip, N.Y.) scored at 19:29 off a Samantha Lyons (Farmingdale, N.Y.) pass to cut the lead to 4-2, and another Napoli goal at the ten minute mark cut the lead to one point. However, four straight Davidson goals gave the Wildcats an 8-3 lead heading into halftime.
The Pioneers came charging out at the half and went on the offensive attack with four consecutive goals, two of them on free position shots, to cut the Wildcat lead down to one at 8-7. Napoli, Hogan, Lyons, and Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) each tallied goals during the rally. Davidson's Jen Crawford scored one of her six goals on the day to put the Wildcats back up 9-7, but back to back goals by Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) and Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) tied the score at nine apiece. However, five Davidson goals, including two by Crawford pushed the score to 14-9 Davidson, and despite two late goals by Lyons and Kim Williams (Long Valley, N.J.), the Pioneer's second half rally fell short.
In addition to Napoli's three goals, Lyons and Hogan each tallied two goals apiece, while four other Pioneers notched single goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) made five saves while Davidson goalie Michelle Pav registered nine saves.
The Pioneers return to action on March 10 as they travel to Georgian Court for a 3:30 takeoff.
