Men's Basketball Hits Lucky 21: Schmidt Scores Career-High 41 Points

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2009) –
Senior guard Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) exploded for a career-high 41 points and the second-ranked C.W. Post men's basketball team made it 21 straight wins on the season as the Pioneers rolled to a 102-81 victory over host NYIT in Wednesday evening ECC action.
The Pioneers boast an overall record of 21-0 and a perfect 15-0 slate in conference play, while the loss drops the Bears to 11-12 overall and 7-8 in the ECC.
NYIT started out quickly, pushing to an 8-2 lead early on, but the Pioneers got back quickly settled down and chipped away, tying the score at 14-14 at the 14:33 minute mark. From that point on, the Pioneers erupted for a 22-7 run, with 10 of those points coming consecutively from Kenny Burkes (Suitland, Md.), pushing the lead to 37-21. The Pioneers never looked back, heading into the half with a 57-21 lead, with Schmidt accounting for 17 of his points in the first half and Burkes hitting for 12.
Charging quickly out of the halftime break, C.W. Post pushed their lead to 27 points (66-39) after Schmidt's trey at 17:23, and the rest of the game was all Pioneers as they led by as many as 34 points before coasting to the 21-point victory.
Schmidt's career night came off 11-of-19 shooting from the field, including five treys, and a 14-of-17 outing from the charity stripe, rounding out his line with five assists and and four steals. Burkes scored 17 points, Nick Carter (Huntington Station, N.Y.) chipped in with 12, freshman Russell Holloway came off the bench for a career-high 11 points and 9 rebounds, and Roberto Macklin (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) added 10 points.
NYIT was led by senior Bryant Lassiter, who's 20 points made him the new NYIT all-time scoring leader with 1,850 career points.  Senior Mickell Vickers added 18 points for the Bears.
The Pioneers shot at a 53% clip from the floor and 46% from behind the arc (32-of-60 and 12-of-26). The Bears held a 33-27 advantage on the glass. 
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday as they host Molloy at the Pratt Recreation Center.   Game time is 3:30 p.m.
