Baseball Set To Defend ECC Title In 2009

The 2008 season saw the Pioneers establish a new standard of success for C.W. Post baseball as the team won it's first ever East Coast Conference Championship title and advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship for the first time since the 1985 season.

Despite graduating eight seniors, head coach Pete Timmes enters his fourth season as the Pioneer skipper returning four of his five top hitters and three of his top five pitchers from last season. The team will be strong and experienced up the middle, and Timmes looks to guide his squad to their third winning season in as many years. The Pioneers, tabbed first in the East Coast Conference Preseason poll, expect to defend their ECC title as well as challenge for another appearance in the NCAA Championships.

"Last year we raised the bar in terms of expectations for success," remarks Timmes. "We got to the regionals, and we saw the level of competition there. This year, we will need to compete at that level. We know our limitations, we know what the wooden bat league is all about. We need to go out and execute, and we'll get where we want to be."

Catchers

Arguably one of the best backstops in the region, Brian Anderson (Nesconset, N.Y.) returns for his senior season and Timmes expects a big year from the veteran catcher. With more depth at the catching position, Anderson will get more of a break from the daily grind of the position, which should improve his offensive numbers even more. The strong-armed catcher hit .272 with 22 RBI last season out of the clean-up spot. Anderson could also see some time at first base, giving him a breather from catching.

Junior transfer Stephen Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and freshmen Edgar Marcelo (Bronx, N.Y.) and Paul DelGiacco (Levittown, N.Y.) will provide depth at catcher and will look to push for playing time in their first season with the Pioneers.

Infield

Anthony Montesano

Senior lefty Mike Barba (Farmingville, N.Y.) will provide depth at first base and a potential lefty bat off the bench, in addition to another veteran presence in the infield.

Senior Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) returns for his fourth season as the starter at second base, and will combine with junior shortstop Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) as integral offensive and defensive performers. Timmes looks for his double-play combination to step up their offensive performances even more with the absence of graduated senior Mike Sylvester who led the team in several offensive categories last seaon including average, runs scored, total bases and slugging percentage.

Sophomore Kyle Dean (Southbury, Conn.) could provide depth in the middle infield if necessary, while also pushing for a spot in the outfield.

Third base will be a competition between three players, including two freshmen, as senior P.J. Ragone (Deer Park, N.Y.) and freshmen Michael Alfano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and Nick Compito (Jericho, N.Y.) will battle for the starting nod at the hot corner. Ragone is a fourth-year Pioneer who could also see time in the designated hitter slot, giving Timmes several options with his lineup. Alfano has good arm strength, which could also earn him time on the mound, while Compito is a fundamentally sound player. All three players have the potential to be a solid presence in the lineup.

Outfield

Junior Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) returns to patrol center field, and along with senior Bruce Testa (Glen Cove, N.Y.), who will move from right field to left field, the two veteran outfielders will look to build upon solid 2008 performances.

Callaghan hit .299 last season and was one of the more consistent players on the team, and Timmes expects a repeat performance and more from the gritty outfielder. In his first season as a full-time starter, Testa's range improved during the course of last season as he became more comfortable with the outfield, and Timmes believes he will benefit from the switch to left field. Offensively, he will look for the senior to be a run producer in the middle of the lineup.

Freshman Jordan Stevens (Sound Beach, N.Y.) is slated to be the frontrunner for the right field position, and the rookie will provide solid defense and looks to contribute immediately to the offense.

A healthy Dean will also look to challenge for an outfield spot, and freshman speedster Edward Bartley (Bethpage, N.Y.) will push for playing time in addition to providing a baserunning option off the bench.

Pitchers

Timmes will continue to utilize the pitching rotation that could see any number of players pitching in any number of roles. ECC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) returns as the senior ace of the staff and will see most of his innings as a starting pitcher. The righty looks to repeat last season's 7-2, 2.14 ERA performance while serving as a big game pitcher for the Pioneers.

Senior Kenny Grassano (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and junior Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) are also looking for success as starters in the rotation. Budkevics, along with Kay, will be one of Timmes' go-to pitchers, and Grassano, if healthy, could be a big part of the rotation.

Junior transfer Mark Czerniawski (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and freshman Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.) are two newcomers that the coaching staff has high expectations for. Czerniawski is a command pitcher, and Hudson is a lefty with good control, and both will look to make in impact in their first seasons with the team.

Junior Brian Saldana (Deer Park, N.Y.) saw several spot starts last year in addition to his relief role, and Timmes is looking for a similar showing from the lefty in 2009. Dan Walsh (Centereach, N.Y.) and Roger Pfeffer (Whitestone, N.Y.) both saw time on the mound last year, and Timmes indicates that both will be relied upon to play a bigger role this season. Pfeffer, a sophomore, will continue his development while staying in the mix for starts, and Walsh's progression last season put him in position to handle more innings during his senior year.

Brett Belsky (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a junior righty, will continue to serve in a middle relief role, along with several freshman who will be in the mix for relief and starting roles. Michael Behar (Staten Island, N.Y.) has good velocity on his fastball and will see time out of the bullpen. Greg Byrnes (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) is a control pitcher who could provide good secondary middle relief. Steve Plochochi (Sayville, N.Y.) has good control and keeps batters off balance, and will push for innings out of the bullpen. Mike Stolfi (Cos Cob, Conn.) missed much of the fall season with illness, but has the size that Timmes thinks could indicate good production from the freshman. Alfano and Compito could also see time on the mound in addition to their infield duties.

A grueling schedule down south is the way the Pioneers will start off their season, as they play traditionally strong teams like Ashland and Grand Valley State in the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida.

"We're going to see some tough competition," says Timmes, "but we'll come back from Florida a better team."

The ECC schedule includes traditional rivals such as Adelphi and Dowling, and Timmes has also scheduled non-league games with NE-10 opponents UMass-Lowell, Southern New Hampshire, New Haven, Southern Connecticut and Stonehill, along with CACC members Wilmington (Del.), Bloomfield, Post, Dominican and Caldwell.

(Bellmore, N.Y.) will look to solidify first base, while also seeing some time behind the plate. The senior saw 13 starts last season, but his offensive performance could earn him a full-time role if he can repeat last season's .360 average and .500 slugging percentage.
