Baseball Drops 7-3 Decision to Southern Connecticut

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 16, 2009) – The baseball team outhit the Southern Connecticut Owls on Monday afternoon, but 12 walks issued by the Pioneer pitching staff gave the Owls too much run support as C.W. Post fell by a final score of 7-3 in non-league baseball action.
The Owls took an early 1-0 lead as Andrew Babb's fielder's choice scored Sam Greenberg from third, but the Pioneers tied the game up in their half of the inning as
Edward Bartley (Bethpage, N.Y.) led off with a single and scored on
Anthony Montesano's (Bellmore, N.Y.) single to right center.
The Owls took the lead again in just the next inning, as Greenberg's RBI groundout to second base scored Nick DeProspo to give Southern Connecticut a 2-1 lead.
Again, the Pioneers came back with a run of their own in the third to tie the game at two apiece, as
Kyle Walker's (Wantagh, N.Y.) single up the middle scored Bartley from second.
C.W. Post took the lead in the fourth as Bartley reached on a fielding error with two outs that let
Stephen Orefice (Wappingers Falls) to give the Pioneers a 4-3 advantage.
The lead would be short-lived however, as Southern Connecticut pushed across two runs on a bases-loaded, two-out infield error by the Pioneers that put the Owls up 5-4.
Two more runs in the top of the seventh secured the win for Southern Connecticut as the Pioneers were shut down at the plate for the last three innings of play.
Steven Plochochi (Sayville, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss giving up four runs on two hits in 2.0 innings, striking out two and walking four.
Steven Ferarra (Farmingdale, N.Y.) gave up only two hits and no earned runs in two and two-thirds innings and
Brett Belsky (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also went two and two-thirds giving up only one hit and no runs.
Bartley had two hits and scored two runs for the Pioneers, and Orefce went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Pioneers will next take on Bloomfield College on March 18, in a 3 p.m. start.
