Dowling Takes First Game From Baseball, 6-2; Game 2 Suspended After 15 Due To Darkness

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (March 21, 2009)
– Dowling College scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to overcome and early C.W. Post lead and won the opening game, 6-2, in Saturday afternoon East Coast Conference baseball. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed after 15 innings due to darkness. The game will resume Sunday afternoon at C.W. Post.
 
With the win, Dowling improves to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the ECC while C.W. Post slips to 3-15 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
 
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when junior catcher Stephen Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored on a bases loaded walk issued to senior third baseman #P.J. Ragone# (Deer Park, N.Y.).
 
The Golden Lions' four runs in the fourth were highlighted by two one-run doubles from third baseman Colin Barnathan and first baseman Daniel Pembroke.
 
Dowling scored its fifth run in the fifth inning on another RBI double from Barnathan to centerfield. 
 
C.W. Post added its second run of the game in the top of the seventh when senior second baseman Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored from third on a fielder's choice.  
 
Dowling scored its sixth run in the seventh inning when second baseman Joe Trainor hit an RBI single to right field to score designated hitter Ralph Tufano from third.
 
Sophomore Gabriel Duran earned the win, pitching seven innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and seven walks. Senior Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. 
 
Centerfielder Brian Ferguson went 3-for-5 at the plate for Dowling with an RBI. Walker and senor first baseman Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) each led the Pioneers with two hits. 
 
Both teams will resume playing their game suspended from earlier today Sunday afternoon at C.W. Post and will play an additional full game to close out the weekend.
