BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 22, 2009)- The Pioneers scored a total of six runs to hold off Dowling College in two games, defeating the Golden Lions 1-0, 5-4 in an East Coast Conference matchup Sunday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 5-15 overall, 2-1 in the ECC while Dowling falls to 9-5 overall, and 1-2 in conference play.
The Pioneers kicked off the afternoon with a continuation game from their doubleheader at Dowling College, which began at noon yesterday. After going 16 scoreless innings, the teams resumed their play prior to their regularly scheduled game.
Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) was the lone player to score a run in the 16 inning battle, earning a win for the Pioneers. Walker singled up the middle on his at bat, getting himself on base. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Walker took for home teammate Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) singled to the short stop, earning an RBI and clinching the win for C.W. Post.
The Pioneer pitching staff combined to throw a sixteen inning shutout. Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Pioneers, throwing for eight innings allowing only two hits and no runs. Brian Saldana (Deer Park, N.Y.) continued Budkevics' streak for the next seven innings, letting up a mere three hits and no runs, earning himself the win. Junior Mark Czierniawski (Glen Cove, N.Y.) took the mound for the final inning, allowing no hits and no runs, ensuring the Pioneer's win.
Game 1
The Pioneers earned themselves another tally in the win column as they took the field again to face the Golden Lions for the third and final showdown of the weekend. Both teams were quiet throughout the first four innings. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, The Golden Lions made a pitching change, subbing Andrew English in for Marc Rutledge. English walked Pioneer center fielder Callaghan, advancing Mike Alfano (Happauge, N.Y.) and putting C.W. Post on the board.
Kyle Walker then took advantage of a wild pitch thrown by English, scoring his second run of the day and increasing the Pioneers lead to two. Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) then gave the Pioneers a three run cushion as he scored on an error by Dowling second baseman Joe Trainor before finishing out the inning.
Edward Bartley came out strong in the sixth inning for C.W. Post. After being walked by English, Bartley stole second. He then advanced to third and scored on another Dowling error. The Pioneers led 4-0 into the seventh inning, until Dowling started a four run comeback. Although tying up the game, the Golden Lions fell short after Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) scored a run to push C.W. Post ahead, 5-4.
Czierniawski started the game for the Pioneers, throwing for six innings and allowing seven hits with four runs. Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.) cemented the win for C.W. Post, taking the mound for two innings and allowing 3 hits and no runs. Marc Rutledge pitched four innings for dowling allowing three hits and three runs before being replaced by Andrew English who threw for four hits and two runs in three innings of play.
The Pioneers are back in action March 25 as the travel to the University of New Haven for a non-conference matchup scheduled for 3 p.m.
