ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N .Y. (March 27, 2009) –
A strong pitching effort by Bobby Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) combined with timely hitting by the Pioneers resulted in a victory for the baseball team over the Molloy College Lions on Friday afternoon in East Coast Conference baseball action.
The Pioneers improve to 6-16 and 3-1 in the conference, while the Lions slip to 10-9 and 1-2 in ECC play.
The teams played three scoreless innings before Keith Kenny powered a home run over the right field fence to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneer bats finally came to life in the sixth as Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) drew a two-out walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Mike Callaghan's (East Meadow, N.Y.) single to left center.
The next inning the offense continued to work for the Pioneers as Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) led off the seventh with a walk. He moved to second on a groundout by Stephen Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and came around to score on Jordan Stevens' (Sound Beach, N.Y.) double to left field. Stevens scored on a Bruce Testa (Glen Cove, N.Y.) single to right center to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead.
The lead was all the Pioneers pitchers would needas Kay went seven innings scattering five hits, striking out five and walking two in allowing only one run. Brian Saldana (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief as Budkevics picked up the save.
Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Bonin each had two hits for the Pioneers as they handed Justin Jorgensen his first loss of the season.
C.W. Post and Molloy will continue their three game series tomorrow as the Pioneers host the Lions in a 12 noon doubleheader.
