Box Score
AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 9, 2009) – The struggles continue for the baseball team, as they dropped 12-3 decision to Stonehill College on Monday morning in the Russ Matt Invitational.
The Pioneers drop to 0-8 on the season while Stonehill now stands at 3-2.
The teams played a scoreless two innings, and the Pioneers pulled ahead in the third.
Stephen Orefice's (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) singled to left and scored on
Bryan Bonin's (Commack, N.Y.) RBI single to right field.
Pioneer starter
Brian Saldana (xx) had blanked the Skyhawks for five innings, striking out 11 in the effort, but in the sixth the Stonehill bats came alive as they touched Saldana for four runs.
Dan Walsh (Newfield, N.Y.) came on in relief, giving up one more run to put the Skyhawks up 5-1.
The Pioneers answered right back in the bottom of the inning as
Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) led off with a single down the left field line. A walk to
Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) put runners on first and second for
Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.), who singled to left to drive in Walker. A fielding error by the Skyhawks loaded the bases and a
Michael Alfano (xx) sacrifice fly to left field scored another run, cutting the lead to 5-3.
However, six runs in the seventh and another run in the eighth gave the Skyhawks more then enough insurance as they cruised to the win.
Saldana took the loss despite striking out 11 and walking only one.
Greg Byrnes pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Pioneers.
Offensively, the Pioneers were led by Callaghan's two hits and one RBI.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow as they take on Grand Valley State at 9 a.m.
