No. 2 Women's Lacrosse Edges Out Dowling, 14-8

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 15, 2009) - Senior attacker
Samantha Lyons (Farmingdale, N.Y.) registered a career-high six assists to help the C.W. Post women's lacrosse team defeat Dowling College, 14-8, in an East Coast Conference match-up Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve their overall record to 10-1 and 2-0 in conference play, while the Golden Lions fall to 7-3 and 2-1 in the ECC.
Senior
Jaclyn Napoli (West Islip, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with four goals for the afternoon while junior attacker
Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists and freshman
Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) registered a hat trick.
Napoli put the Pioneers on the board first just 1:14 into the game on a feed from Lyons. Olen quickly followed Napoli's lead, as she tallied her first goal in an unassisted effort just nine seconds later.
Dowling answered back with two goals of its own, both scored unassisted by sophomore Cassandra Cronin to tie the game at 2-all with 18:04 on the clock.
Freshman midfielder
Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) recorded her third goal of the season at 17:08 off another assist from Lyons to put the Pioneers ahead, 3-2. Olen and Lyons connected less than a minute later to give C.W. Post a two-goal lead.
The Golden Lions attempted to close the gap after a free position goal from sophomore Kelly Sefalu at 16:25, but senior midfielder
Katie Hogan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Napoli cushioned the Pioneers' lead with back-to-back goals on assists from Passafiume.
Passafiume and freshman midfielder
Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) both added a goal of their own to close out the first half with C.W. Post leading 8-4.
Dowling proved to be down but not out as the Golden Lions started off the second half with two back-to-back goals, the first of which coming just 15 seconds into the period from sophomore attacker Samantha Messineo and senior midfielder Lauren Marra following up just over a minute later with an unassisted goal.
The Pioneers answered back, going on a 5-1 scoring frenzy led by Napoli with two goals to increase the host school's lead to 13-7 with 6:48 left to play.
Cronin scored her third goal and final Dowling goal of the game unassisted at 6:37
Junior midfielder
Kim Williams (Long Valley, N.J.) picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers on the defensive end to help the Pioneers to a win.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sam Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) made 12 saves in net for the Pioneers to secure the win. Powers improves her personal record to 10-1 for the season.
Rachel Goldstein played all 60 minutes in net for Dowling and made six saves.
The Pioneers outshot the Golden Lions by a 25-24 margin, while holding a 16-15 advantage in
groundballs.
