Sixth Inning Offense Powers St. Thomas Aquinas Past Baseball, 2-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 23, 2009) – Designated hitter Joe Antenucci recorded the game-winning two-run hit as St. Thomas Aquinas pulled out a 2-0 win over C.W. Post in East Coast Conference baseball Thursday afternoon.
St. Thomas Aquinas improves to 15-19 overall and 8-8 in conference play. C.W. Post slips to 12-24 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
Antenucci's hit came in the fifth inning with one out as he rapped a hit to right field to drive in third baseman Dan McDermott. Centerfielder Matt Marotta also came around to score on the same play from first base on an error by the catcher.
C.W. Post had the tying run on second base in the ninth inning after freshman designated hitter Eddie Bartley (Bethpage, N.Y.) reached on a base hit to third and advanced to second when freshman right fielder #Jordan Stevens# (Sound Beach, N.Y.) singled through the right side. The Spartans got out of the jam when relief pitcher Dave Schwartz came into the game and got senior second baseman Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.) to ground out.
Tyler Savin picked the win, scattering six hits through eight and two thirds innings while striking out four batters and walking three.
Junior Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing two runs on nine hits in six innings pitched with four strikeouts.
Leftfielder Nick Barbaloto and Joe Guistino each recorded two hits for St. Thomas Aquinas. Stevens led the Pioneers with two hits.
The Pioneers return to action hosting a doubleheader against Concordia College Saturday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m.
