Three-Run Rally In Ninth Lifts Baseball Over Queens, 5-2

FLUSHING, N.Y. (April 29, 2009) – A two-run double from junior shortstop Bryan Bonin (Commack,N.Y.) capped off a three-run ninth inning rally for C.W. Post as the Pioneers came back and pulled out a 5-2 victory over Queens College Wednesday afternoon in East Coast Conference baseball.
The win ends a five-game skid for the Pioneers as they improve to 13-29 overall and 10-11 in conference play. Queens slips to 6-21 overall and 5-16 in ECC action.
Junior Mark Czerniawski (Glen Cove, N.Y.) pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs on three hits while fanning nine batters and issuing four walks on 125 pitches. Senior Daniel Kupec took the loss after pitching eight and a third innings and allowing five runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
C.W. Post took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman centerfielder Eddie Bartley (Bethpage, N.Y.) scored from third on a double play. Queens caught up and tied the game in the bottom half of the first when junior shortstop David Fisher stole second and third and scored on a ground out to the shortstop.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore centerfielder Anthony Delury hit a base hit to left field that scored sophomore leftfielder Jeffrey Gomez from third to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage.
C.W. Post tied the game in the eighth when Bonin led off with a single to center and scored from second after a throwing error from the third baseman that allowed senior first baseman Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) to reach first.
The Pioneers wasted no time in the ninth as Bonin hit a one-out double down the right field line that scored Bartley and junior designated hitter Kyle Dean (Southbury, Conn.) to put the Pioneers ahead, 4-2. Bonin scored C.W. Post's fifth run on a double down the right field line off the bat of senior second baseman Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.).
Bonin batted 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored for C.W. Post.
C.W. Post will play a doubleheader at home against Adelphi University Saturday afternoon, beginning at 12 p.m.
