BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 8, 2009) - Katie Hogan
(Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Jaclyn Napoli (West Islip, N.Y.) each tallied three goals as they led the second-ranked women's lacrosse team past a visiting and eighth-ranked New Haven on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
With the win, C.W. Post improves to 8-1 overall, while New Haven drops its second straight game and sits at 9-2.
Napoli put the Pioneers on the board just twenty seconds into the contest with a free position goal, but the Chargers answered with a goal of their own by Brianna Kenworthy at 29:04.
A 3-0 run that saw Hogan score on a free position shot, Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) tally an unassisted score, and Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) score on a free position shot gave the Pioneers a 4-1 lead.
UNH answered with a score by Ashley Ferrandiz at 21:36 and pulled to 4-2. Hogan fired home a shot from a Samantha Lyons (Farmingdale, N.Y.) pass that pushed the Pioneers to 5-2, but again New Haven answered and Alexis Gabbe's shot from Ashley Ferrandiz's feed cut the advantage to two goals.
Another 3-0 run, capped by two goals from Napoli and one from Olen, gave C.W. Pot a 8-3 edge, and the Chargers were only able to muster one more goal before the halftime break as the Pioneers took an 8-4 advantage into the break.
After a scoreless seven minutes to open the second half, UNH's Brigid Brady found the back of the net on a free position shot, making the score 8-5 in favor of C.W. Post. Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) countered with a goal of her own on a feed from Brie-Claire Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) making the score 9-5. But back to back New Haven goals by Mallory Ferrandiz cut the score to 9-7.
An Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) score, with the helper credited to Hogan, at 13:51 pushed C.W. Post back to a three goal advantage, 10-7, but it was short lived as Mallory Ferrandiz fouond the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the game to pull to within two, 10-8.
The Pioneers went on a three goals to none streak for the third time in the game as Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) tallied a goal and Lyons added back to back scores to push C.W. Post to a 13-8 advantage.
UNH scored again with 6:42 remaining to pull to within four goals, but Hogan fired home a shot and pushed the lead to 14-9. Two New Haven goals with less than a minute to play pulled the Chargers to within three goals but C.W. Post sealed the victory as they won their eighth straight game.
In addition to her three goals, Hogan also added two assists. Lyons scored two goals and dished one helper, Olen scored two, and Fucich added a goal and an assist.
The Pioneers are in action again on Saturday, April 11 as they travel to Merrimack for a 4 p.m. matchup.
