Adelphi Holds Off Baseball With 5-3 Victory

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (May 4, 2009) – The C.W. Post baseball team's hopes of continuing to play in the postseason were dashed when the Adelphi University Panthers hung on for a 5-3 win over the Pioneers in the final East Coast Conference baseball contest of the season.
Adelphi improves its record to 27-14 overall and 17-7 in conference play. C.W. Post concludes its season with a 13-32 overall record and 10-13 mark in conference action.
The Panthers put their first run across the plate in the bottom of the first inning when senior catcher Ryan Boelsen ground into a double play that scored senior centerfielder Robert Paccione.
Adelphi added insurance runs in the bottom half of the third beginning with base hit form Paccione followed by a bases-clearing triple from senior leftfielder Thomas Harper. Boelsen laced a single centerfield that scored Paccione from third. The final run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly from O'Hara.
C.W. Post scored its first run in the top of the fifth when freshman rightfielder Jordan Stevens (Sound Beach, N.Y.) singled to left to center to score junior centerfielder Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.).
The Pioneers cut the lead closer with two more runs in the seventh via a bases-loaded balk and an infield error.
The visitors threatened again in the top of the ninth when junior shortstop Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with two outs. Bonin advanced to second on a single from senior second baseman Kyle Walker (Wantagh, N.Y.). Senior first baseman Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, N.Y.) loaded the bases on a fielder's choice. The inning ended when Callaghan lined out to the second baseman.
Paccione was 1 for 3 with two runs scored while Boelsen batted 1 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Stevens went 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI while senior third baseman #P.J. Ragone# (Deer Park, N.Y.) 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Junior Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) started the game and recorded five innings, allowing five runs on four hits with three strikeouts and four issued walks.
