Men's Basketball Eases Past Mercy, 95-65

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (February 13, 2010) – Five players scoring in double figures, headed up by
Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) with 25 points and
Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.) with 19, enabled the C.W. Post men's basketball team to roll to a 40
th consecutive victory at the Pratt Recreation Center, as the Pioneers overpowered Mercy by a final score of 95-65.
The Pioneers improve to 18-5 overall and 14-3 in conference play, while Mercy falls to 1-23 overall, 1-16 in the ECC.
C.W. Post opened the game with a 13-0 romp that set the tone for the game right away, and led by a sore of 34-21 at the midway point of the first half. Mercy was able to make some headway and pull within eight points, 38-20, with 7:31 to play in the first, but a C.W. Post surge that saw the Hall and Butler combine for nine unanswered points gave the Pioneers a 16-point, 54-38 edge heading into the halftime break.
The second half was much of the same as two quick buckets from
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) and Hall pushed the lead into the 20-point range, where it would remain for almost the entire second half. Led by ten second-half points from Hall, and 13 in the latter period from senior guard
Roberto Macklin (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), the Pioneers kept their lead around 25 points for the entire second half as all but one player contributed point-wise to the victory.
Hall's 25 points came off near perfect 12-13 shooting, while Butler's season-high 19 points were bolstered by a 9-12 showing from the charity stripe. Kohler combined 10 points with six assists and senior forward
Nemanja Jokic (Sombor, Serbia) added 10 points as well.Senior forward
James Tchana (Douala, Cameroon) pulled down a season-best 10 boards, while junior guard
Gil Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) added six assists.
C.W. Post held a 44-37 advantage on the glass, as it shot at a 55% clip, making a season-high 35 shots from the floor, and made 23-29 free throw attempts. The Pioneers were extremely dominant in the paint, outscoring Mercy 62-26, and also taking advantage of 22 Mercy turnovers to score 22 points.
The Pioneers look to continue their winning ways as they host NYIT on Wednesday, February 17, in a 7 p.m. matchup.
