BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 13, 2010) - Sophomore attacker Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) kicked off the 2010 season with a team high five goals as she propelled the C.W. Post Pioneers past the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University, 18-4, Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse.
The Pioneers open up their season with a 1-0 record while the loss brings the Penmen to 0-1.
After an almost scoreless ten minutes in the opening half, senior attacker Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) took advantage of a man-up situation to put C.W. Post on the board, 1-0. C.W. Post continued its scoring run, as Olen, along with senior midfielders Kian Lyons (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Kim Williams (Long Valley, N.J.) capitalized on free position shots to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead. SNHU graduate student Maura Murphy (Candia, N.H.) scored her first of two goals in an attempt to squash the Pioneers' momentum. Olen notched her third goal of the contest with just over two minutes left in the first half, while senior midfielder Brianne Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) connected with teammate Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) to give C.W. Post a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first half.
Olen opened up scoring less than a minute into the second half, rocketing a shot past SNHU goalkeeper Hannah Moriarty (Chelmsford, Mass.). Murphy scored her second goal of the game while junior defender Brittany Whiteway (Billerica, Mass.) notched a goal of her own to pull the Pioneers within three goals at the 23:45 mark. Just twenty seconds later, Williams scored her second unassisted goal to open up a seven goal streak for the Pioneers. Sophomore Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) converted a feed from attacker Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) to give C.W. Post a six goal cushion.
Goals from Olen, Spagnoletta and junior attacker Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) would give the Pioneers a comfortable nine goal lead. Jackolski and Mayott each tallied a goal before midfielder Emily Mongeau (Westborough, Mass.) scored the final goal for the Penmen with 5:30 left in the second half.
Freshman Morgan Chiarenza (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from sophomore midfielder Chelsea Donaldson (Bay Shore, N.Y.) less than a minute later to increase the Pioneers lead to 15-4. Spagnoletta, Olen and Janelli each added a goal apiece while freshman Megan Noone (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) added an assist to give C.W. Post the win.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) made three saves between the pipes during just under 40 minutes of play. Freshman keeper Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) allowed just one goal while playing 20 minutes in net for the Pioneers.
Moriarty blocked 16 shots in goal for Southern New Hampshire.
The Pioneers outshot the Penmen 49-11 and held a 20-7 advantage in ground balls. C.W. Post completed 16 of 17 clears while capitalizing on 5 of 11 free position shots and winning 19 draw controls.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday, March 16 as they host Northeast-10 opponent, Southern Connecticut State University at 4 p.m.
