Fourteen First Half Goals Push No. 3 Women's Lacrosse Past Southern Connecticut, 20-3

- Eleven different players scored to lead the No. 3 C.W. Post Pioneers women's lacrosse team past the Southern Connecticut Owls, 20-3, on Tuesday afternoon on Hickox Field.

Senior attacker Staci Passafiume (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with four goals and two assists for a total of six points, while senior midfielder Brianne Jackolski contributed three goals and two assists to secure the win. Midfielder Kim Williams (Long Valley, N.J.) finished the afternoon with three goals along with six groundballs and five caused turnovers for the Pioneers.
C.W. Post improves to an overall 2-0 record while the Owls fall to 0-2.
Passafiume opened up a six-goal scoring run for the Pioneers less than a minute and a half into the first half as she ripped a shot past Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Lisa Corso. Jackolski and Williams each tallied an unassisted goal of their own to give C.W. post a 3-0 lead. Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) connected with teammate Kian Lyons (Farmingdale, N.Y.) to give the Pioneers a four goal cushion just four minutes into play. Jackolski then scored back-to-back goals before Owls' attacker Elizabeth Dishian put her team on the board at the 20:16 mark.
Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) tallied her first of three goals on the afternoon off a pass from Passafiume to start C.W. Post on an eight goal scoring frenzy. Spagnoletta received a feed from freshman midfielder Abigail Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) to net her second goal of the game. Freshman Megan Noone (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) added her first collegiate goal, unassisted with just over twelve minutes left in the half. Williams, junior Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.), midfielder Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) and Olen each contributed goals to give C.W. Post a 14-1 lead at the end of the first half.
Southern Connecticut showed momentum in the beginning of the second half, as Teresa Monfredo scored off a pass from KellyAnne McCafferty less than a minute into play, but it would be short lived as Olen and Williams each connected with Passafiume to put the Pioneers ahead 16-2. Senior Caitlin Heraghty (Levittown, N.Y.) scored at 12:31, followed by a Janelli goal off a Ross feed at 11:06. Sophomore midfielder Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) found the back of the net at 8:42 to increase C.W. Post's advantage. McCafferty added on more goal for Southern Connecticut off a free position shot before sophomore Chelsea Donaldson (Bayshore, N.Y.) received a feed from junior attacker Taryn Crimi (West Islip, N.Y.) with just over a minute remaining to bring the Pioneers to a 20-3 victory.
C.W. Post junior Sam Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) registered one save in net for C.W. Post in the first half, while freshman Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) made three saves in 30 minutes in goal. Corso stopped 11 shots between the pipes for Southern Connecticut.
The Pioneers held a 23-7 advantage in groundballs and outshot the Owls 40-13. C.W. Post won 16 draw controls and caused 12 turnovers.
C.W. Post is back in action Saturday, March 20, as they travel to St. Michael's for a 1 p.m. matchup. The Pioneers and the Purple Knights will participate in Lax4Life to support The Allyson Rose Green Memorial Foundation.
