BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 19, 2010) –
Solid hitting with runners on base, along with excellent relief pitching were keys to the C.W. Post baseball team's 9-5 victory over Blomfield College on Monday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve their record to 22-10-1 overall, while Bloomfield slips to 6-29 overall.
Bloomfield scored three runs in the first, as starter Mark Czerniawski (Glen Cove, N.Y.) loaded the bases with one out. A single to center field, a sacrifice fly to right field, and another single to left field gave Bloomfield a 3-0 advantage.
The Deacons tacked on another run in the third as reliever Zach Badanes (Syosset, N.Y.) issued a bases-loaded walk, but he settled down to get a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
The Pioneer bats came alive in the third as sophomore designated hitter Paul DelGiacco (Levittown, N.Y.) led off with a single up the middle. Senior left fielder Kyle Dean (Southbury, Conn.) dropped a single into right field, and with two men on, freshman center fielder Zack Graczky (Carmel, N.Y.) ripped a booming double to right center field that scored DelGiacco and put runners on second and third with no outs. A sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Mike Callaghan (East Meadow, N.Y.) plated another run, and a fielding error by the Bloomfield shortstop allowed Dean to race home, making the score 4-3.
An inning later, the Pioneers continued their comeback, as sophomore second baseman Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) singled to center field to lead off the fourth. A walk to freshman third baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) and a bunt single by DelGiacco loaded the bases. A single to right field by Dean drove in the tying run, and another Graczyk double, this time a liner down the left field line, made the score 6-4 in favor of the Pioneers. A sacrifice fly off the bat of senior shortstop Bryan Bonin (Commack, N.Y.) drove in another run, and an unearned run on an error by the third baseman saw the Pioneers take an 8-4 lead.
C.W. Post added another run in the bottom of the eighth as Graczyk hit his third double of the afternoon, and scored on a wild pitch.
Badanes settled down nicely after giving up a run in his first inning, and earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing one run on five hits, striking out two. Junior pitcher Marshall Kapson (Commack, N.Y.) earned the save as he came on in the seventh and pitched a solid three innings to close out the contest, giving up only one run in the bottom as pinch hitter Delroy Cox tripled to right field and scored on a grounder to the shortstop.
Graczyk finished the game batting 4-for-5, scoring three runs and driving in three others as he knocked three two-baggers. Compito went 3-for-4, and DelGiacco and Dean each had two hits and two runs scored, respectively.
Sean Stimpfel went 3-for-4 for Bloomfield.
C.W. Post is in action tomorrow as it hosts Mercy in a 3 p.m. contest.
