Volleyball Poised For a Big Season
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept 8, 2010) - Coach
Shellane Ogoshi begins her second season at the helm for C.W. Post, and looks to improve upon her first as the Pioneer head coach. In her first season, the team posted a record of 14 wins and 14 losses, with an 8-4 mark in conference play. The team returns five players, including four seniors who will help lead the group. C.W. Post looks to avenge their semi-final loss in the conference championships last year and go on in search of a conference title.
Senior outside hitter
Marilena Guadagnini (Huntington Beach, Calif.) looks to improve upon her impressive numbers from last year's campaign. Her totals of 253 kills and 288 digs were category leaders on the team, including her registering of seven double-doubles. The 5 foot 11 Guadagnini will be looked upon to lead the team on and off the court and help improve upon last year's record.
Returning as the overwhelming team leader in sets will be senior
Amanda Ostapow (East Setauket, N.Y.). Ostapow looks to be the starter at setter for the Pioneers after recording 876 assists last year, including a season-high 59 against Mercy on Oct. 5. She also played good defense, recording 217 digs, and will look to better those numbers throughout the year.
After suffering an injury that held her to seeing limited time last year, Senior Sammy Filiolia (Wantagh, N.Y.) returns to the Pioneer roster. Coming into the rotation as an outside hitter, Filiolia looks to add upon her already stellar career numbers. The senior enters the season with 904 career digs, as well as 738 career kills.
Another returning senior that figures to spend time as libero is
Kim Lubeski (Bishopville, Md.). Lubeski looks to help stir the offense for the Pioneers, while also improving upon her defense where she recorded 130 digs last year, including a season high 12 against Bridgeport (Nov. 5).
The lone returning underclassman is sophomore
Geony Fisher (Goodyear, Ariz.). Figuring into both right and middle blocking positions, Fisher starts her second year in the program after a season of 139 kills, with 16 of them coming against Bridgeport on Nov. 13. She also recorded 32 blocks on the season for the team.
The team also welcomes a trio of transfers.
Andrea Nolan (Ridgefield, N.J.) and
Laura Garbarino (Nutley, N.J.) are both coming from Southern Connecticut, while
Lisa Delfs (Canadaigua, N.Y.) comes to the Pioneers from Dowling. Nolan looks to see time in the setter position, while Garbarino looks to compete for time at the right side hitter position, as well as the possibility of middle hitter. The six foot Delfs looks to add depth to the middle blocker position.
Four incoming freshmen look to add more depth to the Pioneer roster, while also adding good ball control and versatility.
Stephanie Coufal (Littleton, Colo.) will challenge Lubeski for time at the libero position.
Shayla Hixson (Honolulu, Hawaii) and
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) look to figure into the rotation as middle and right side blockers.
Jordan Schroer (Kailua, Hawaii) looks to help add versatility to the offense.
C.W. Post has composed a strong non-conference schedule for the 2010 campaign, and will face some tough competitors, including an athletic American International College on Oct. 23 and 10 matches against NE-10 opponents, with two of them against LeMoyne College. The Pioneers will open conference play on the road against Molloy on Sept. 23. The home opener will be Sept. 8th against Felician College at 7 p.m.
