CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2015) - LIU Post women's tennis senior
Didi Fatchikova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and freshman
Shanice Arthur (Brookville, N.Y.) have individually been tabbed as the East Coast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Fatchikova and Arthur were a combined 5-0 in singles last week in the Pioneers' quest to secure a third-straight bid to the ECC Championship. They each also compiled a 3-0 record in doubles competition.
Fatchikova lost only one game in singles, defeating both Roberts Wesleyan College's Marine Kennel (6-0, 6-0) and Daemen College's Hayle Scanlan (6-0, 6-1) in straight sets on back-to-back days. Additionally, she teamed up with fellow senior
Lucie Chrastecka (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) to earn three victories at top doubles, including a pair of 8-2 wins.
Arthur, who boasts the second-best No. 1 singles winning percentage (.857) in the ECC, posted an unblemished 3-0 mark at the top-singles flight. After going the distance against Caldwell College's Tamara Klimek (6-2, 1-6, 10-6), Arthur earned straight-set victories against Roberts Wesleyan's Natalia Cardona (6-3, 6-0) and Daemen's Karli Hollins (6-0, 6-3).
She, like Fatchikova, was also flawless in doubles play. Arthur, now a four-time ECC Rookie of the Week honoree, paired up with junior
Heena Kewalramani (Bangkok, Thailand) to go 3-0 at second doubles on the week.
Fatchikova, Arthur and the Pioneers are back in action Friday (Oct. 23), as the No. 4 seed in the East Coast Conference Championship. They will face either New York Institute of Technology or Queens College in a semifinal match-up at the Queens Tennis Complex in Flushing. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. NYIT and Queens will meet for their regular-season match-up on Wednesday (Oct. 21) to decide the winner of the tournament's top seed.
