KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 12, 2015) - On Saturday, the LIU Post wrestling team defeated Centenary College, Hunter College and the United States Merchant Marine Academy at the Mariner Duals, hosted at USMMA's Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point.

LIU Post 25, Centenary 21
In the Pioneers' (5-5) closest match of the day, sophomore James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) posted a match-winning 8-0 major decision of James Valley (North Plainfield, N.J.) at 285 to send the green and gold to their first of three wins on the afternoon.
 
Down 4-0 after the first bout, sophomore Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and junior Vinny Turano (Wantagh, N.Y.) each earned six points at the individual 133- and 141-lb. weight classes to give LIU Post a 12-4 cushion. Calderone pinned Christian Sable (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) only 18 seconds into the second period, while Turano was victorious via forfeit.
 
Two matches later, freshman T.J. Fabian (Wading River, N.Y.) pinned Allan Jordan (Port Reading, N.J.) in 2:56 at 157 to widen the Pioneers' lead to 18-7.
 
The Cyclones battled back though, winning four of the next five bouts, to even the score at 21-all. That set the stage for Louison's match-clinching major of Valley at heavyweight.
 
LIU Post 40, Hunter 11
In the win against Hunter, LIU Post was the beneficiary of three forfeits. Additionally, Calderone (23-4) and Turano (17-0) respectively teched Jaydon Rice (Bethlehem, Pa.) and David Naupari (Corona, N.Y.) at 133 and 141.
 
Following the first four matches, the Pioneers had built a commanding 22-0 advantage.
 
Freshman Dan Arkow (Merrick, N.Y.) and sophomore Ronnie King (Islip, N.Y.) individually won via pinfall at 174 and 184 lbs. Despite trailing 9-6 after the first period, Arkow pinned Nick Brutus (Bay Shore, N.Y.) in 4:23. Meanwhile, King bested Alexis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y.) on the mat in 4:32.
 
LIU Post 29, USMMA 15
In a back-and-forth battle with Merchant Marine, the Pioneer heavyweights sealed the victory.
 
Trailing 15-14 after seven bouts, King and sophomore Jake Horton (Medford, N.Y.) were both awarded six points at 184 and 197, as their opponents were unable to finish the match. Louison used a pair of takedowns to edge Francis Walter (Mount Prospect, Ill.), 4-1, at 285.
 
Calderone shut out Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.), 5-0, in the 133-lb. discipline. Turano needed just the first period to record a 19-0 technical fall of Daniel May (Stafford, Va.) at 141. Turano collected a takedown and 16 near-fall points in the opening three minutes of action.
 
Lastly, Fabian pinned his second opponent of the afternoon, securing a fall of Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) in 3:38 at the 157-lb. weight class.
 
Head Coach Joe Patrovich and his LIU Post squad are back at it on Wednesday (Dec. 16), when they travel to Kutztown, Pa. for a 7:30 p.m. dual at Kutztown University.
