Wrestling Skyrockets to Sixth In Latest Super Region I Rankings

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2015) - The LIU Post wrestling team climbed three spots in the latest Basford/Super Region I Poll, which was released on Monday. The Pioneers now stand in a tie for sixth place in the rankings, with the Super Region I Tournament right around the corner.

Additionally, three Pioneer grapplers maintained individual rankings in their respective weight classes. Leading the way for the green and gold is freshman Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.), who is the No. 2 wrestler in the Basford rankings at 133 pounds. Calderone finished the regular season as the best lightweight on the Pioneers' roster, boasting a 22-6 overall record. That includes a dominant 14-2 dual mark, and a team-best 12 recorded pinfalls. Calderone's debut season in Brookville included a first-place showing at the Long Island Open on Jan. 3 and, most recently, a third-place finish at the USC Wildcat Open on Feb. 1. In his final regular-season bout at Shippensburg on Feb. 16, he took a 7-2 decision over the Raiders' Karl Lightner (Smethport, Pa.), who is ranked fourth in the Basford rankings at 133.

Junior Jesse Meaney (Toms River, N.J.) currently ranks third at the 141-lb. weight class. He sports a 14-8 record overall and was a third-place finisher at the Long Island Open on Jan. 3. Meaney also has two wins over wrestlers ranked in the latest Basford rankings, as he scored 2-0 decision victories over No. 5 Pat Owens (Seton Hill) and No. 6 Matt Benvenuto (Kutztown) earlier this season.

Finally, senior Chris DiIorio (Holtsville, N.Y.) has been slotted third in the latest Super Region I rankings at 197 pounds. DiIorio is tied for second on the team with 16 overall wins and is second to Calderone with 11 dual victories on the season. The senior finished second at the Long Island Open on Jan. 3 and earned a sixth-place finish at the USC Wildcat Open on Feb. 1. DiIorio claimed a 5-4 win over Kutztown's Brandan Clark back on Dec. 14, which has turned into a solid regional victory as Clark is ranked fifth at 197 by Basford.

Head Coach Joe Patrovich and the LIU Post wrestling team will now travel to West Virginia for the Super Region I Tournament. The competition begins on Friday (Feb. 27) on the campus of West Liberty.
