Box Score LANTANA, Fla. (Mar. 6, 2015) - Despite a strong start from sophomore hurler
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.), the LIU Post baseball team dropped its 2015 season opener, 2-1, to Post at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana.
The Pioneers (0-1) got on the board first in the fourth inning after junior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to lead things off. Later in the frame, graduate outfielder
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) reached with a bunt single, loading the bases. Then, a wild pitch plated Groeneveld, giving LIU Post a 1-0 lead.
DeCarli held the Eagles (3-6) out of the hit column until the fifth inning, and that's when Post scored its two runs. A lead-off single, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by shortstop
Rick Alessi (Smithtown, N.Y.) put runners on second and third with one out. Post's Brian McKenna then delivered a two-run double to right, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
LIU Post would threaten in the ninth, putting a runner on third with one out, but Maccarone and pinch hitter
Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) couldn't drive in the tying run.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Mar. 7) with a doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire in Lantana. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
