Box Score 2 LANTANA, Fla. (Mar. 7, 2015) - On Saturday, the LIU Post baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to No. 20 Southern New Hampshire, 11-3 and 8-4, at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana.
In Game One, LIU Post (0-3) got on the board first in the opening frame. Graduate student
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) started the inning with a double down the right-field line. Tolan then stole third and came home on
Vinny Iacono's (Nesconset, N.Y.) sacrifice fly.
The Penmen (9-5) responded though with a pair of runs in the second and third innings. Sophomore pitcher
James Long (Oceanside, N.Y.) seemed to settle down after that, keeping SNHU off the board in the fourth and fifth.
Yet, the Penmen tacked on another run in the sixth, and two more in the seventh, ending Long's day. The sophomore went 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned), while striking out five in his first action of 2015.
In the last of the seventh, the Pioneers put up a two-spot to cut into the Penmen lead, but SNHU added four more in the top of the eighth to seal the win in the opener.
Sophomore outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) led the way with two hits for the green and gold. Tolan, graduate outfielder
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.), sophomore catcher
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and junior second baseman
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) each collected hits as well.
In the latter game, with the Pioneers trailing 4-1, red-shirt senior
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) crushed his first collegiate home run into the parking lot beyond the right-field fence.
That seemed to spark the green and gold, as Daley followed with a double down the right-field line. He eventually came around to score after Bowers hit a sharp liner off the pitcher's glove, making it 4-3. That would be as close as the Pioneers would get, however, as SNHU answered with three of its own, making it a 7-3 game.
Brunetti and Bowers both had two hits and an RBI. Daley and senior shortstop
Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.) also added a hit each. Graduate pitcher
Connor McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.) went 4.0 innings and allowed seven runs (four earned).
Next up for head coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers is a match-up with No. 1 Tampa at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. on Monday (Mar. 9).
