ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2015) - The LIU Post softball team swept Molloy in an East Coast Conference match-up at Bob Klein Field on Thursday. The Pioneers came out on top, 5-2, in Game One, and edged the Lions in the nightcap, 2-1.
In the opener, Molloy (12-19, 7-4 ECC) held a slight one-run edge through two innings, but LIU Post (15-6, 11-0 ECC) answered with two runs in the third to rally. After senior outfielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) led off the frame with a single through the right side, junior designated player
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) ripped a two-out, 2-0 offering over the left-center field fence to give the green and gold the lead.
Swantek wasn't done there. Two innings later, she and sophomore second baseman
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) belted solo blasts to widen the Pioneers' advantage to 4-1. Peet needed no time to work the opposing pitcher, as she took Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) deep on the first pitch she saw.
Peet later capped off the scoring in the first game of the doubleheader with a one-out sacrifice fly to right in the top of the seventh.
In the circle, sophomore
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) went the distance, allowing four hits, two runs and five walks, while fanning five. The win improved Martin to 8-1 on the season.
During the nightcap, LIU Post got on the board first in the opening frame. A passed ball on ball four to
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) allowed Havens to cross the plate for the game's first run.
Then, in the third, Dzierzynski, in her second turn at-bat, drove a pitch beyond the left-center field wall for a solo shot. That homer was her 48th career round-tripper, which tied former standout Christie Softy for the all-time lead.
Now ahead 2-0, the Pioneers surrendered a solo homer to Alexandra Russo (Coram, N.Y.) in the fourth to close the gap to a one-run contest. That was the only run the green and gold surrendered though, as
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) posted her third complete game of the year.
Salcido gave up just two hits and struck out six in 7.0 innings of work. She now stands at a 4-2 mark through the 2015 campaign.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to the field Saturday (Apr. 11), when they face Mercy in an ECC twinbill in Dobbs Ferry. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
