DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2016) - Junior midfielder Klara Berggren (Stockholm, Sweden) notched the game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation Saturday afternoon, propelling the LIU Post women's soccer team to a 2-1 win against Mercy College in East Coast Conference action at Mercy Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hillevi Eklow (Väröbacka, Sweden) kept the Mavericks (8-3, 4-1 ECC) off the board early, as she stopped all three shots she faced in the first 20-plus minutes of action.

Then, in the 31st minute, freshman midfielder/forward Gabrielle Clark (Edmonds, Wash.) corraled an Alexandra Dencker (Newburgh, N.Y.) pass and fired a shot into the net to give the Pioneers (7-2-1, 2-1 ECC) a 1-0 lead.

LIU Post, which extended its winning streak to five consecutive matches, took a 1-0 advantage into the break.

In the second half, Mercy capitalized on a misplay in front of the net to tie the score. Junior midfielder Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) tallied the equalizer in the 61st minute, evening the match at 1-all.

However, in the final minute of regulation, Berggren provided the late-game heroics for the Pioneers. With 56 seconds left, she sent an Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) cross into the mesh for the deciding goal.

Between the pipes, Eklow made a game-high five saves for LIU Post. Junior netminder Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz.) turned aside three shots for Mercy.

Head Coach Mark Dawson and the Pioneers return to the pitch Monday (Oct. 10), when they host Caldwell University in a non-conference tilt at Pioneer Soccer Park in Brookville. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
