DANBURY, Conn. (Jun. 7, 2016) - On Tuesday, the Eastern College Athletic Conference announced its 2016 Division II Baseball All-Stars, and three members of the LIU Post baseball team were recognized.
Senior first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.), sophomore shortstop
Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) and red-shirt senior pitcher
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) were all named to the ECAC All-Star Second Team.
Groeneveld, an NCBWA All-East Region Honorable Mention and All-East Coast Conference second-team honoree, led the Pioneers with four home runs, 18 doubles, 38 RBIs and a .556 slugging percentage. He also had a 16-game hitting streak from Apr. 8 to May 7 and ended his career with a 3-for-5 game with two RBIs in a win over Mercy College.
Spitaleri was the lone Pioneer to start and play in all 43 games this year. The sophomore hit .275 with 20 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. His 33 runs scored were second-most on the team and his 42 hits were third. Additionally, the sure-handed infielder posted a .925 fielding percentage with a team-best 123 assists.
Arena led the team with a 2.15 ERA, after suffering a season-ending injury in his lone outing in 2015. The lefty allowed 14 earned runs in 58.2 innings, while striking out 44 and walking 12. In his final start as a Pioneer, Arena threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout with nine strikeouts against Mercy.
