MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 23, 2017) - On Thursday night, the LIU Post baseball team came back from a three-run deficit to knock off No. 6 Southern New Hampshire University by a 4-3 score at the 2017 Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach.
Trailing 3-0 at the midway point of the contest, the Pioneers (2-3), who were held to just two baserunners in the first four innings, started their rally with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Following back-to-back hits to open the inning, sophomore infielder
Michael Greene (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) singled in fellow sophomore
Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.) to put the green and gold on the board.
Two batters later, junior outfielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) made it a one-run game with a two-out RBI single, plating senior outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) from third.
The Pioneers weren't done there. The green and gold tacked on two more runs in the home half of the sixth to take the lead.
In a frame that nearly mirrored the inning before, sophomore first baseman
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) delivered a game-tying RBI single, after the first two hitters reached base.
Then, with two away, a double-play ball from freshman designated hitter
Zach Fritz (East Meadow, N.Y.) scored senior catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) for the eventual game-winning run.
Senior closer
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) was tasked with obtaining a four-out save to preserve the victory. He retired the first four batters he faced, all via strikeout, for his first save of the season.
Meanwhile, junior pitcher
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) earned the win in the decision. He threw seven innings of four-hit, three-run (two earned), five-walk, 10-strikeout ball in his second start of 2017.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and his LIU Post squad are back at it Friday (Feb. 24), when they face Felician University in the 2017 Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
