CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (May 11, 2017) - The East Coast Conference gave out its year-end baseball awards Wednesday, and LIU Post junior outfielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) and freshman pitcher
Noah Lorenzo (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) were named the league's player and co-rookie of the year, respectively.
Andreoli is hitting at a career-best .370 clip this season and sports a .373 average in ECC play. He has also amassed a league-leading 39 runs batted in and 15 doubles and stole 22-of-25 bases.
Additionally, Andreoli, an All-ECC first-team honoree, is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak and had the team's first five-hit game since 2009 with a 5-for-5 showing against Queens on Apr. 17.
Lorenzo, who shared the honor with Mercy's Anthony Murphy, has compiled a 6-1 record with 40 strikeouts and a 3.69 earned-run average, en route to earning All-ECC second-team honors.
Lorenzo, a two-time ECC Rookie of the Week, leads all freshmen in the conference in wins (6) and places in the Top-10 in the league in earned-run average and complete games (2).
In addition to Andreoli, four other Pioneers were selected to the All-ECC First Team. They were senior pitchers
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) and
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.), senior outfielder
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) and senior catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.).
DeCarli has continued to be the ace of the pitching staff, sporting a team-best 7-1 record (four complete games) with 63 strikeouts. His seven wins and 2.48 ERA both rank second-best in the conference.
From the bullpen, Jagiello has served as the team's lockdown closer in 2017, recording a league-high nine saves with 28 strikeouts. He has let up just one earned run over his 11 save opportunities this year.
Daley is batting .266 with two home runs and 17 RBIs, while Asbaty boasts a .215 average with four homers and 21 RBIs. Daley has also successfully stole a base on all 12 of his tries in 2017 and owns an unblemished 1.000 fielding percentage (62 PO - 4 A - 0 E).
Sophomore shortstop
Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore designated hitter
Anthony Vaglica (Franklin Square, N.Y.) joined Lorenzo on the All-ECC Second Team.
Mendyk was one of just three Pioneers to bat .300 in the regular season. He hit .301 in 41 contests and smacked nine doubles, in addition to stealing 10 bases and carrying a .398 on-base percentage.
Vaglica has spent much of the year in the clean-up spot and produced a .278 average with six homers and 36 RBIs, both of which rank in the Top-5 in the league. He was twice named the ECC Player of the Week and garnered NCBWA East Region Player of the Week accolades on Feb. 28.
