Wrestling Drops Two Close Matches on Final Day of Kutztown Duals

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The LIU Post wrestling team came up just short in its final two matches at the Kutztown Duals Saturday, Jan. 27.
 
Round Three – Millersville 33, LIU Post 14
 
The Marauders jumped out to an early lead behind a forfeit and injury default at 125 and 133 to take a 12-0 lead through two bouts. Senior Joe Calderone continued his impressive weekend, pinning Ryan Quarez 2:17 into his bout at 141 to cut the deficit in half. Millersville had the answer however, earning five points for a technical fall at 149 before graduate student T.J. Fabian took four points by major decision (15-3) at 157 to make it 17-10, Marauders midway through the round.
 
After a forfeit at 165, junior Dan Arkow took down Kyle Narber, 15-6, to earn four points for the Pioneers by major decision. It was the final win of the round for LIU Post however, as Millersville secured 10 points over the final three bouts to earn the win and drop the Pioneers to 1-2 on the weekend.

Round Five – Seton Hill 24, LIU Post 22
 
Another close bout was in store for the Pioneers in their final matchup of the event. For the second consecutive round, LIU Post fell behind early, trailing 11-0 through two bouts but Calderone again cut the deficit in half with his fourth victory of the weekend and third by fall to make it 11-6. The Griffins responded with a pin of their own at 149, but the Pioneers took the bout at 157 and 165, when Fabian earned a 14-2 major decision, and freshman Ryan Nichols earned a narrow 4-3 decision to bring LIU Post back within four points with four bouts remaining.
 
A major decision for the Griffins at 174 made it 21-13, but the Pioneers took six points at 184 when freshman Mark Malico pinned his opponent 5:32 into the bout, making it a two-point match with two bouts remaining. The Griffins earned a decisive win at 197 however, pulling ahead by five points with a 7-2 decision heading into the final bout. Needing at least a technical fall to level the scoring, freshman Damien Caffrey earned the win by decision but it was not enough to give LIU Post the victory, as Seton Hill held on for the 24-22 final.

LIU Post returns to action for their final home match of the season on Sunday, Feb. 4 for Family and Alumni Appreciation Day, as well as senior day when the Pioneers will honor their four graduating members before the match.
