CLERMONT, Fla. – The LIU Post softball team battled to a doubleheader split with Bentley University and No. 14 the University of Southern Indiana, defeating the Falcons 2-0 before suffering a 5-2 setback to the Screaming Eagles March 7.
Junior
Julia Seader racked up five hits on the day, adding three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman
Patricia Dun added four hits and one run, while sophomore
Abbey Fortin notched three hits and one RBI on the day.
Game One – LIU Post 2, Bentley 0
Junior
Hannah Olshevski tossed a three-hit shutout to earn her first victory of the season. Olshevski added nine strikeouts on the day and carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before allowing a two-out walk for the Falcons' first baserunner of the game.
The Pioneers had baserunners in each of their first four at-bats but entered the bottom of the fifth still scoreless. After senior
Jaclyn Hahn singled, Seader ripped a two-out double to left field and sophomore
Abbey Fortin followed up with an RBI single to give LIU Post a 2-0 lead.
Olshevski surrendered her first hit in the sixth inning on a two-out single but struck out the following Falcon hitter to retire the side. The Falcons recorded consecutive two-out base hits in the top of the seventh, but Olshevski worked out of the jam by inducing a groundout to close out the contest.
Game Two – Southern Indiana 5, LIU Post 2
The No. 14 Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles took advantage of four Pioneer errors to score three unearned runs in what proved to be the difference in game two. Seader was outstanding at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Seader's two-out homer in the first inning gave LIU Post a 1-0 lead, but the Screaming Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame to go ahead 2-1. Following a scoreless second inning, the Pioneers tied the score in the third when junior
Leah Mele tripled and Seader followed right behind with an RBI-single.
Southern Indiana went ahead for good during the fifth inning, scoring twice on a sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI-single to take a 4-2 advantage and plated a final run in the sixth to earn the 5-2 victory.
The Pioneers return to action on Thursday, March 8 when they battle Georgian Court University and the University of Minnesota Duluth beginning at 2:00 p.m.
