THE FIRST LOOK
LIU Post returns to the East Coast Conference postseason tournament for the second-consecutive season after clinching the No. 4 overall seed with a last-second victory against the New York Institute of Technology in the regular season finale. With the win, the Pioneers finished the regular season with a 17-11 overall record and 10-8 mark in conference play. Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup is the first home postseason game for the Pioneers since the Green and Gold advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen during the 2013-14 season.
Roberts Wesleyan enters postseason play as the No. 5 seed after posting a 14-14 overall record and a 10-8 mark in league action. The Redhawks have advanced to the ECC tournament five-consecutive seasons and are searching for their first ECC title.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Wednesday marks the 15th meeting between the two programs, with an even 7-7 split during the first 14 matchups. LIU Post holds a 3-2 advantage during the last five contests, and the Pioneers and Redhawks split the season series this year, with both sides winning on their home court.
SCOUTING LIU POST
The Pioneers overcame two separate five-game skids this season and have turned momentum in the right direction heading into the postseason. After falling to 8-8 in ECC play, LIU post defeated Mercy College and NYIT in its final two regular season games to clinch the home playoff game. LIU Post boasts the third-best scoring offense in the ECC at 67.8 points per game. Despite ranking eighth in the league in three-point percentage (.269), the Pioneers have proven to be able to catch fire from beyond the arc. In 13 games this year, the Green and Gold have connected on seven or more three-point attempts, including six games with 10 or more triples. LIU Post has made at least one three-pointer in 131-consecutive games and will be the key to their success against the Redhawks. The outside shooting is led by senior guard
Shannon Doyle who ranks ninth in the ECC with 45 made three-pointers.
The frontcourt for LIU Post has been dominant all season long as the Pioneers lead the ECC with 42.3 rebounds per game, including a conference-best 15.1 offensive rebounds per contest. Graduate student
Sasha Patterson has hauled in 289 rebounds this year to lead the ECC and is the only conference player to average 10 or more rebounds per game.
SCOUTING ROBERTS WESLEYAN
The Redhawks, like the Pioneers, enter the postseason on a two-game winning streak and have won four of their last five games overall. On the offensive end, Roberts Wesleyan sits just behind LIU Post in the conference with 65.4 points per game. Wednesday's game is sure to feature a battle in the paint, as Redhawk forward Emily Miller leads the ECC in scoring with 18.3 points per game and ranks second with 9.5 rebounds per contest. Tashayla Sutorius and Taylor Bynoe also average double-figure scoring for Roberts Wesleyan. Sutorius also ranks fourth in the ECC with four assists per game.
Defensively, Roberts Wesleyan allows the third-highest field goal percentage with opponents shooting 38-percent from the field. The Pioneers have been able to exploit the defensive efforts during the first two matchups, averaging 70.5 points per game and knocked down 14 three-pointers during the first meeting.
